From the Porch...

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Three things I did this weekend

Weeks go by, there are 52 in a year.  In the last 30 years (i.e. since I was an adult) I have had 1,560 weekends.

Many years ago I read the best way to slow time is to keep a journal.  The small act of recording our daily activities creates the seed needed to spur a memory.  Otherwise, a memories blur, years, months, weeks, and days pass.

This past weekend I did three cool things:

First, I drove to Georgia to spend time at our cabin.  It is quiet and peaceful at the cabin. The weather was dreary, raining and just 50 degrees most of the weekend.  Regardless, it is always beautiful and the house is my home.  The best surprise was two thank you notes from past Air BNB guests on the kitchen counter.  A thank you to us, and to them I would say thank you too.

Second, I renovated a bathroom. This was no small project, but it should have been easier.  Unfortunately, when you deal with uncertainties the project can take much longer than expected.  However, the end result was success.

Finally, I spent time with my Mom and Dad.  Last January my wife lost her mom.  Over the past year we have had a good friend lose his wife and even my daughters have been touched by losing friends they know.  Thus, I savor any opportunity I get to spend with my Mom and Dad.  The trek to Georgia is nearly 9 hours, it was a short 2.5 hours when we bought the cabin (because we had a plane).  Thus, it is easy to find reasons not to go or something comes up at home (in Florida).  My promise has been to make the trek, no matter how hard, at least every 5-8 weeks.

The three cool things: sanctuary, success, and family.
