Several Things I did This Weekend (3/2/2015)

The last weekend of February or the first weekend of March was upon us – it’s all about perspective. More importantly it was my first weekend of spring break; a much needed break from law school and a chance to spend time with my family.

My wife’s wine walk

LeeAnn has this crazy social schedule. Unfortunately when you are married your spouses social schedule becomes 10509530_10153645850509447_4294644724719275762_nyours. She had an idea to have a wine walk through our subdivision with six other ladies. I was not overly enthused to start and just acquiesced to the fact it was going to happen. Then, her wine walk started to grow in numbers – to thirty-six! As we got closer to the time of the event our commitment started changing and the expectations changed. Thus, the boys and I were getting sucked into the wine walk whether or not we wanted to be.

On Friday afternoon my daughter Marcella had a track meet. Friday was brutally cold and the wind was blowing. I took James out of school to make it to the meet on time and watch his sisters. Also, Jack had a field trip and required picking up sometime between the meet and getting back to the house before the wine walk.

My afternoon started at 1:45p getting James and heading to Flagler-Palm Coast High School. Due to timing equipment problems Marcella’s event did not start until 4:35pm, but she was in the second heat and I had to leave. Thus, I missed seeing her run. Next, I drove back to Port Orange and picked up Ty at school, about 5:20pm. At the same time Jack texted me he was 15 minutes out for his arrival back at school. I raced to New Smyrna to get Jack, successfully, and then we picked up his stuff and went home.

The boys and I watched a movie and patiently awaited LeeAnn’s entourage arrival. The next twist came at 8:15pm – there will be a DJ! And sure enough there was.1509107_10153645850634447_3760474734714721090_n

LeeAnn had nearly 30 women in our house, a DJ, and dancing. It was a very mature version of 40-year old housewives gone wild.

Taxes-Saturday

Saturday is usually spent studying, but without school this week I took the day to attack taxes. They had to be done and I was dreading the outcome. LeeAnn and I worked together to gather documents, calculate childcare costs, track down mail that had tax information and plow our way through TurboTax.

There were interruptions of course as we have two little ones. Plus, Jack and I had to leave to prepare for a scuba trip the next day and he had a paintball birthday party to attend.

Finally about 3:30p, just before I was to head to get Jack again we had our taxes done. But, we learned an important lesson last year – WAIT….Wait to make sure nothing was forgotten and all assumptions were correct. After we sent our taxes in last year we had a form arrive in the mail that disrupted all of our hard work and caused many problems. This year we agreed there should be a time of reflectivity after preparing taxes. Thus, we sit and wait, but are ready to file.

Scuba Diving with Jack

The highlight of my weekend was a dive trip to Devil’s Den in Williston, Florida with Jack. For his birthday I had promised him a trip. Time together is always hard to get and nothing would be better than spending the day with each other.

Late last July Jack became scuba certified at age 13. We sent him to Daytona Beach State College Dive camp for the week. My son impressed me with his attention to detail and willingness to learn. This past January, along with LeeAnn, we attended a technical training class and earned our nitrox certification.

Devil’s Den is an ancient spring fed cavern in north central Florida. On the surface is a hole about 15 feet across. Inside the cavern is a clear, spring fed cavern with depths to 50 feet. It takes time to swim around the entire cavern and makes a great place for diving.

Jack and I had two new accessories with us: a lamp and Jack’s Go Pro. We managed four dives: (1) 40 feet for 25 minutes, (2) 50 feet for 20 minutes, (3) 40 feet for 20 minutes and (4) 40 feet for 20 minutes. Our goal was to practice our descents, equalizing, buoyancy, and using the camera. Of course, we wanted to have fun and did! It was a great father and son day.
